Community

SCHOOLS WORK:

Schools in our area clearly reflect the diversity of the local community and although the majority of the children are Sikh and Muslim, pupils, families and schools all welcome their interaction with Holy Trinity.

Holy Trinity Smethwick welcomes the primary schools to visit us at church, whether as individual classes (learning about prayer; hearing what the church does to help people in need; learning about weddings etc.) or as a whole school activity when they come for Carol Services.

We also go out to primary and secondary schools to take assemblies, to teach in the classroom and to facilitate project work. This includes multi-faith activities with Muslim, Sikh and other colleagues. Our link schools are:

COMMON GROUND: SANDWELL

Common Ground is an interfaith project that engages people of all faiths and none to work together developing and maintaining a Community Orchard in Smethwick.

Over 2017 we cleared seven derelict and very overgrown plots  on the Londonderry Allotments on Manor Road to provide a third of an acre in which to plant fruit trees. In January2018 we took delivery of 140 bare root trees. Despite blizzards, torrential rain and drought, all have been successfully established.

We have started working with Holly Lodge High School on the next phase of our project which involves building a store and shelter, for which the students are currently designing a mural, and developing a herb garden and picnic area.

We have a tree sponsorship scheme which allows people to ‘adopt’ a tree for £25 (PDF of form). We are always looking for volunteers to help with the regular maintenance of the orchard, from clearing new areas and heavy digging (great exercise!) to weeding and pruning. If you are interested, please contact Revd Nick Ross  –  nick.ross@holytrinitysmethwick.co.uk   07881 825319

FAITHFUL FRIENDS ON TOUR

We are a group of faith leaders from Smethwick who have met on a regular basis since 2015 to eat and talk about our faiths, our lives, our communities and the challenges we face.

Over a period of 18 months, we have taken our friends to places that are special on our individual faith journeys and found out how different and yet similar our paths have been. Some of those special places are religious institutions: places of training and of worship, but others are not. Places can be special and spiritual for all sorts of reasons.

We have taken interfaith assemblies in local primary schools, who followed us on social media when we travelled to India and we continue to support project work in schools.

In 2018, we became Coventry Cathedral’s first ‘Together for Hope’ partner: an award which we shared with the Borough of Sandwell.

There are lots of clips on You Tube about out journeys, but the best place to start is ‘The Story So Far’
